CHAPTER IX

NIGHT AGAIN

It was early evening. Ajay slept on the sofa with forearm over his eyes. He did not want to sleep alone in the bedroom.

Maya and Ashok sat at the dining table as she had served him tea and biscuits.

“Please talk to him,” she said, “at times, I don’t know what to do? As the night approaches, I wonder what would happen. Can you prescribe something so that he may sleep better?”

Ashok replied, “I had already prescribed him sleeping pills earlier. But the problem is something else. The pills won’t work.”

“What is the problem?” asked Maya.

“I don’t know yet. It’s a thought in my head,” said Ashok. He paused and thought for a moment before he said further, “I have to spend a night here. I want to see things myself.”

“That will be great,” said Maya, “he will feel better with you around.”

Ajay in his sleep was oblivious to Ashok and Maya’s discussion in which he was the subject.

Ashok’s mobile phone rang and he answered, “Hello… Ah yes! I’m so sorry… It totally slipped off my mind…. I’ll be there in a short while.” Ashok scratched his forehead as he kept the phone back in his pocket, looked at his watch and said, “There is a client waiting in my office. I had forgotten about the appointment. I have to leave now. But I shall be back by 9 pm.”

“Sure,” said Maya, “I’ll keep the dinner ready, please have dinner with us.”

“That will be great. Thanks,” said Ashok with a smile.

“Ashok can you please give me a lift until the supermarket,” asked Maya.

“Sure,” answered Ashok.

“Give me a moment, I’ll just change and come,” said Maya.

Ashok waited for a while. Maya quickly changed into a jeans and tee and came out holding her bag on her shoulder.

“Let’s go!” she said.

She sat in Ashok’s car and they drove.

“You don’t go out much, do you?” asked Ashok.

Maya smiled and said, “No. I don’t get much time. And even now, I have stepped out because my maid has gone on leave. So I have to go to buy the grocery.”

“What do you do at home the whole day?” asked Ashok.

“I beg your pardon?” asked Maya.

Ashok thought that he had offended her, so he said, “I did not mean to offend you. I meant, do you not get bored being at home?”

“I did not get offended Ashok,” she answered, “My time just passes away between the chores of the house.”

“Don’t you miss office?” asked Ashok.

“I used to, but not anymore,” she replied.

She added, “I am usually busy with the house work and in my free time, I do yoga, or try to add some things to the house so that it looks beautiful.”

“Your house is indeed beautiful,” complimented Ashok.

“I do get lonely sometimes but then I wait until Ajay comes back, so we can chat,” she said.

“Right there, the supermarket. I just have to buy some chicken and bell pepper for the dinner,” she said.

Ashok stopped the car.

“Thank you so much Ashok,” she said and she got out.
